Learning more about internet marketing and how to sell good online is a worthwhile pursuit. Most people who embark on the digital marketing journey who are successful often tell of stories of passive income, enough money to do what they want in life, and the freedom that comes with being their own boss. While their stories are inspiring, many of us rightfully wonder, “Could I do it too?”
The answer is it depends – but yes! Anyone can learn to sell goods online and build themselves a successful business. Not everyone will end up successful, however, simply because they don’t educate themselves enough or they don’t take the necessary time to let their online business grow and make money for them.
That’s why I wrote this article. I want to bridge the gap for anyone who wants to make money online by selling goods but either doesn’t know how to or has lost motivation because of failures in the past. I want you to achieve your dream of creating several streams of passive income. I want you to feel like you have the freedom to work when and where you want to or simply do your day job without having to worry about money simply because you love it. I want you to feel like you can take a vacation when you need it and not fear that it is going to break the bank. Whatever your dreams are, this article will help you know what you need to do to begin the process to create wealth by selling online and give you step by step processes to get there.
Where to Begin
There is so much information out there about how to make money online. A lot of it is good. A lot of it is crap. A lot of it is helpful. And a lot of it can feel overwhelming. With so much information to sift through, it can be difficult to know what is helpful and what is complete garbage. Let me give you a few pointers.
People can build wealth online quickly if they have the time and resources, but those who are lacking capital and a lot of time to build an online business will probably not see quick results. This doesn’t mean that you won’t see results at all or that results are impossible even in the short-term, but selling online is a long-term game. Anyone selling you the idea that it is fast is full of garbage, and you should run the other way.
People also don’t have to buy anything to get started selling online. Depending on how you want to run your business, in fact, you don’t even have to spend any money at all. Any scheme that convinces you to buy into their product so that you can be successful is full of it. True, some programs legitimately help and train you to become a great internet marketer and online entrepreneur, such as Wealthy Affiliate, but anyone telling you that you have to spend money to make money in the world of online marketing is likely trying to scam you. This is why it can be so frustrating for many who have already gone down this road before: they don’t want to feel duped. The good news is that you don’t have to.
There are three basic routes you can take to make a really powerful, sustained online business, businesses that after some time and work, generate profit for you on a monthly basis. There are several programs and platforms online where you can make money, sure, but there are only three basic ways you can make money that regenerates by itself month after month. What I am talking about is truly an online business which can be opened in three different ways. The following explains these three different ways, their advantages and disadvantages, and how you can get started.
1. Use Others’ Stores
The first thing you can do to begin making money is use a platform that already exists for online transfers and money-making. These include big businesses like Amazon, Etsy, or Shopify. The advantage to doing this is that they already have a system in place where you can build an online storefront easily and begin selling quickly. This also offers you flexibility to sell what you want and can expect online support from whichever platform you choose. You can also supply a product or can sell with no personal inventory of your own.
The downside to using these pre-built websites is that you often have to pay royalties or commissions to these companies whenever you make a sale or money transfers hands to you from a consumer. Sometimes, the amount can be substantial. For example, if you sell a digital book on Amazon, they often charge about 20% commission for your book. That’s a really big chunk out of your potential profits. Another disadvantage to these pre-made online stores is that they don’t often allow complete flexibility of design, so it is harder to customize your store front in a way that may be more appealing to your target audience/demographic.
If you are interested in using the infrastructure that already exists online, it is as simple as choosing which one you want to go with to best suit your needs. Amazon is good for people who already have suppliers for their large base of products. Ebay is good for anyone who buys collectors items low and wants to turn a profit by selling high. Etsy is a better idea for people who crank out crafty goods that customers want to buy. Bonanza may be the best for anyone interested in the fashion industry. There are several others (such as Bigcommerce, GoAntiques, CafePress, 11 Main, or Zibbet), each with something unique to offer. It is simply a matter of finding which one works best for you and what you want to sell.
2. Build Your Own Store
The second option you have is to create your own online store. This often consists of creating your own website, populating it with content, centering it around a products/products that niche markets want to buy, and then generate traffic to your site to create sales leads.
The advantages of building your own store include having total flexibility over the creative design of your storefront, which has been shown to be very helpful in making more potential buyers real paying customers. It also allows you to sell more than just physical good and lets you sell information products as well. You can also make a store for practically no money initially. There are some downsides to it, of course, but it still means that the average Joe can start an online business and begin to do well for himself/herself.
The disadvantage of an online store of your own is that you don’t have immediate support or assistance if something goes wrong unless you invest in a training program. It may also be initially more difficult to establish your brand if people are unaware of who you are. By far, however, I have seen that creating your own online store gives you the best chance of setting yourself up for success when it comes to creating passive income.
How you do this is first start with a website, even a free one, such as signing up for one with the box below:
After you obtain a website, you market it through search engine optimization or through other marketing channels such as paid advertising, like Facebook ads or Google paid searches. This will boost traffic to your store and hopefully convert them to where they pay for your online goods. This is a long journey and difficult venture for most, but with enough consistency and dedication over time, you will begin to see money flow in with very little effort.
3. Sell Other People’s Products.
This may sound like the first way we mentioned, but it is a completely different idea. What we mean by selling other people’s products is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is where you take an online store, never even touching or creating a product, and sell some sort of good on behalf of another person or company. When they make a sale because someone visited your website, you get a commission.
The advantage of doing this is that you never have to create a product of your own. You simply have to create a website and get traffic as you would with the previous way mentioned. The disadvantage is… let me get back to you on that one. The point is, I see no downside to affiliate marketing, and it can generate some major cashflow for you with way less headache.
The best way to get started is by finding an affiliate product you can market. The best are those which sell monthly memberships of some kind, because this isn’t a one-time transaction but a payout to your pocket every month. If you aren’t sure how or where to begin, I recommend taking a look at WealthyAffiliate.com. It’s initially free to join, and these great people have prepared everything you need to know from selecting an affiliate program you can sell to learning how to garner more traffic and sales from your website.
